TANGA

World fusion mob mixing up Caribbean dance beats with East African marimba, Colombian electrocumbia and Guatemalan dancehall

About Us

TANGA is a west coast world fusion mob, mixing up Caribbean beats with east African marimba, Colombian electrocumbia and Guatemalan dancehall.

Formed in 2007, the band emerged from a collective of musicians who cut their teeth playing in the salsa dance scene while embracing jazz and pop music. Inspired by the party grooves and percussion styles of latin heavies like Tito Puente, Machito and Mario Bauza, they released their first full-length album Simmer & Serve (2009).

Breaking new musical ground meant finding inspiration beyond borders. Tanga branched outward with their second album Havanaelectro: a rich soundscape born out of recording sessions in Cuba, featuring the sounds of Silvana Kane (Pacifika), Kyprios (Sweatshop Union), members of Tanta de los Guaracheros (Havana) and Grammy Award-winning trombonist Jimmy Bosch (New York). It's been called a "powerful recording" (BC Musician), and " the most refreshingly contemporary expression of latin groove music so far" (WorldBeat International). Havanaelectro was nominated for the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards: World Recording of the Year and the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards: World Group of the Year.

The band is now set to release their third album Reincarncion (2017) on TrebleFive Records, highlighting new sounds from their recent musical recording trip to Ecuador, South America. Check out the singles "Guanchaka" featuring special guest MC Guanaco, "Cumbia Loca," and "Hasta al Fin" with troubadour Benjamin Venagas.
